Hyper carp handle 1

Hyper Carp XTR Landing Net Handle

A crucial part of landing big carp quickly is having a landing net that is up to the job. Not only does it have to be strong enough to scoop big carp constantly. It also needs to be stiff enough to enable precise manoeuvres. Even when using heavy carp nets. Over the last year I have been very impressed with the Hyper Carp XTR Landing Net Handle. Which has been more than up to the job of landing carp well into double figures easily.

This is an extremely stiff handle, enabling me to scoop carp quickly, often before they realise what is happening. Yet, unlike many stiff handles, it doesn’t feel delicate or brittle in any way. It has taken some serious abuse in its stride. I particularly like the reinforced wrap which gives extra reassurance that this handle is well up to the job.

If you fish a variety of different venues the 4m length and three piece design will come in very useful. Although it is not designed as a featherweight handle, it is perfect at full stretch, thanks to that rigidity.

The bull-nosed male joints are another nice feature. Along with the reinforced machined fitting they give maximum strength in all of the high-stress areas. There are even alignment markers that ensure the pole has maximum strength and rigidity when assembled.

Landing net poles have a tough, unsung life, but are absolutely crucial pieces of kit. If you are looking for a brilliant all-rounder then look no further than the Hyper Carp XTR landing net handle.

Big Pit Mini Feeder

One of my favourite feeders in the Browning range is the Big Pit Mini. This diminutive version of the standard Big Pit Feeder is my go-to on venues where I need to recast regularly, often catching fish on the drop, or when I want to limit the amount of bait that I am introducing. This is particularly important when fishing for silvers, where overfeeding can be a problem with many larger feeder designs.  If I’m fishing drains, big wide canals and short chuck on a lake, these are my go to feeder!

The reduced size of the Big Pit Mini allows me to feed a pinch of free-offerings compressed between two plugs of groundbait. Enough to keep the fish interested and no more. Although the feeder has a really open configuration, with much larger holes than many similar designs, the internal ridge hold groundbait really well. This ensures that you can punch these feeders out on the cast, when faced with a stiff cross wind, for example, without losing the contents – this is even the case with really dry mixes.

A lot of the venues that I fish are between 30 and 60 metres wide, so the 15 gram to 30 gram loading on these small feeders is perfect. Coupled with Cenex Feeder Braid and my Sphere Braid Special feeder rod they really fly accurately.

The moulded plastic construction have proven to be very reliable and doesn’t not suffer from the brittleness sometimes seen in other feeders. The short stem and moulded in swivel produces a strong and tangle-free design.

If you regularly target silverfish on slow-flowing rivers, drains or stillwaters, or perhaps want to introduce a snack-sized helping of sticky pellets for carp, then I can thoroughly recommend you give these feeders a go.

Dimensions 24mm long by 25mm in diameter.

Size 15 grams, 20 grams, 25 grams, 30 grams.

The Big Pit Mini is just right for feeding small amounts of bait.

The moulded design is strong, but light and grips the bait well.

The range of weights is just right for medium range work on both rivers and stillwaters.

"The small size means there is no fear of overfeeding."

The weights are securely held in place.

Swivels are moulded into the stem, reducing tangles significantly.

The Big Pit Mini feeder is one of my favourites, especially when I want the bait to release quickly, thanks to the large holes.

Sphere Feeder MH 390 fishing rod - specialised for feeder fishing.

Sphere Feeder MH 390 fishing rod!

The Sphere 13ft Medium Heavy Feeder Rod is ideal for my style of fishing, especially on the larger stillwaters and wider rivers where casting further is often needed, bream dominate, massive weights are possible and heavier feeders and thicker lines are required.

Probably the most impressive part of this rod is its ultra slim and ultra light, weighing in at just 210g! Created from the highest quality carbon blank available this rod is as close to perfection as it comes and simply oozes quality throughout from the ultra low friction “Skeletal” SIC guides to the Fuji reel seat. The unique ergonomic weight reducing handle has been designed to follow the contours of your arm, hand and fingers when playing a fish or casting, transmits more feel throughout and the quality of the blank adds metres and accuracy to each and every cast made. The responsive blank reduces the chance of hook-pulls under the rod tip, especially from soft mouthed fish such as skimmers, yet it still has loads of power in the middle reaches to subdue bigger fish such as carp that will undoubtedly get hooked from time to time.

Supplied with four tips, 1oz, 1.5oz, 2oz and 3oz makes this rod extremely versatile and easily capable of casting weights up to 100g on these bigger more demanding venues.

Take a look at the Sphere range of rods and if possible give one a go, you won’t be disappointed.

Sphere Square Pole Protectors

Fishing a long pole all day can be tough work, especially if there is a cross wind continually buffeting the sections. One feature of Browning poles which makes fishing in these tough conditions so much easier are the Square Ergonomic Pole Protectors (SEPP’s) that fit the 13m, 14.5m and 16m sections.

These short butts feature Browning’s unique square section technology, which gives them a distinct flat-sided profile with rounded corners. This is so much easier to grip and hold under the forearm, reducing pole movement and making the pole easier to use for extended periods. This allows me to concentrate more on the fishing, enabling me to fish more precisely for longer than ever before.

The profile of the Sphere SEPP’s is slightly more rounded than some of the other Browning poles, which gives them the perfect profile in my opinion for maximum comfort. When the conditions are rough this makes a massive difference to how well I can fish.

The Square Ergonomic Pole Protectors also have brilliant integrated EVA foam bungs that protect the ends of the sections from damage when shipping back.

All in all, a brilliant innovation that has made a massive contribution to fishing the long pole. Make sure you try them out the next time you visit your local Browning Pole Stockist.

The Square Pole Protectors are available for the 13m, 14.5m and 16m sections.

You can ship back with confidence, thanks to the built in EVA bungs.

The square profile fits perfectly under the elbow, giving more stability and control, especially in windy conditions.

Sphere MgTi Reels

Here we have Rory Jones using the 50 size reel on the river Wye in search of chub and barbel. With its larger spool diameter, this is a great reel for heavier main lines of 0.20mm plus. For hard-fighting fish in snaggy swims the cranking power, and extra strong stainless steel main shaft make this a brilliant reel for big fish.

Dacron Connectors

Creating a neat, no fuss connection between your elastic and rig can significantly cut down on tangles. Dacron Connectors have become increasingly popular for this job, particularly with the modern trend to use hollow elastics, which are thicker than traditional solid elastics. Not all connectors are created equally though, and I find these brightly coloured Dacron connectors just the job, especially with my regular Stretch 7 hollow and Cenex Microbore elastics. Not only are the beads soft enough to pull easily over the chunky knot that you get when tying hollow elastics, but they butt-up nicely against my Xitan PTFE bushes.

The Dacron loop is just the right size to make attaching your rig easily. All in all, this is a very well thought-out product that does the intended job perfectly.

Jim Hall

The connectors come in handy packs of four.

The Dacron connectors create a neat, tangle-free link between elastic and rig.

Landing Net No-Snag Latex

We all have favourite items of kit, ones that seem to last forever and just don’t let us down and one of mine is the No-Snag Latex Landing Net head. The reason is that over the years I’ve lost count of how many nets have let me down at the vital moment, either being too weak for the constant punishment they get from commercial match fishing, threads stripping or frames breaking however the area that seems to go first is the mesh. Standard mesh nets get damaged easily, be it from getting caught in a bank side snag, a hook snagging within, catching in the zip when closing a net bag, or more likely from a split dorsal fin of a carp whilst being unhooked. All these can cause a small tear in the mesh and once there, the landing nets days are numbered. Just constantly putting nets away in a net bag damp will eventually take its toll and over time weaken the mesh from rotting.

Mesh nets are a thing of the past for me and Latex mesh nets are here to stay as they take all the punishment thrown at them and simply brush them aside. Hooks and fins don’t get caught up, all saving vital seconds in a match and they don’t rot, the only minor disadvantage is that Latex nets are slightly heavier but for all the advantages they provide, I can live with this.

Available in three sizes –

L 50cm x W 38cm x D 28cm

L 60cm x W 48cm x D 30cm

L 60cm x W 48cm x D 35cm

The strong frame and quality mesh make this net ideal for catching lots of carp.

The latex mesh eliminates hooks and rigs snagging, which helps save time and protect your catch.

Latex nets offer many advantages and are my only choice.

Xitan 10+ Tube Pole Holdall

The Xitan 10+ Tube Pole Holdall was the first piece of the Xitan luggage range that I purchased when it came out and ever since I’ve been adding additional items on a regular basis, that’s how satisfied I am with everything.

Having numerous poles and top kits the last thing I wanted was to have to carry certain items separately in addition to a pole holdall, something I’ve been doing in the past, so opted for the large 10+ tube holdall as I needed every bit of extra space available. It might be a big piece of kit measuring 190cm long by 27cm wide by 30cm height but now I can simply load it into the car and know that everything is fully protected and with me when I arrive at the venue. The material it’s made from is great as it’s very durable, waterproof and is wipe-clean, great for keeping the motor clean and tidy after fishing through such a wet and often muddy winter, it certainly looks the part as well!

What I’m impressed with most is the layout of the compartments as they have been carefully thought through and padded in the appropriate areas to protect every section within. The large double main compartment contains up to 10+ tubes and the full size front compartment divides in 1 x full and 2 x half length pockets with side zips.

There are no external pockets to snag in transport and the heavy duty zips open 90% of the holdalls length which eliminates any possibility of zip failure at the base. Coming complete with padded shoulder strap, double carry handles and a bottom grab handle on the reinforced base, all of which makes moving and lifting onto the trolley or into the car a doddle.

If you’re looking for the ultimate large pole holdall that will easily home your valuable pole and top kits then look no further.

There are two other sizes available, a 6+ tube holdall and an X-Long 10+ holdall.

Dean Tennant

The 10+ capacity is ideal for 16 metre poles, plus top kits and accessories.

The classic Xitan design carries across the whole luggage range.

The wipe clean material is easy to keep clean and really keeps its looks.

"A brilliant holdall for the pole angler."

The base of the holdall is strongly reinforced.

Extra strong zips are used on each of the compartments.

The holdall is very streamline, with all of the compartments running the full length of the bag, which stops snagging and makes it much easier to load into a car, or transport on a barrow.

Black Magic Standard Keep Net

The 2.50m Black Magic Standard Keep Net, which is the shortest of three lengths available, is ideal for my winter canal match fishing when a decent weight would be around 10lb, yet with 40cm x 50cm rings its easily capable of taking the 50lb commercial venue match weight limits.

The tough, fish friendly, dark 6mm mesh is ideal in the canal’s gin clear water as it blocks out any light, keeping the fish, mostly skimmers and roach at this time of year safe and reduces the chance of pike being attracted, which can be a problem trying to attack the fish in the net, and on occasions ruin a swim.

All the weak points, like corners, have been reinforced and the metal framed top and bottom rings stop the net from collapsing. The angle lock is fantastic as it allows the net to be positioned perfectly every time and an innovative addition to this is the retaining cord which eliminates any of the parts being lost in transit.

Another benefit of the mesh is it dries really quickly, reducing smells and disease transfer and the pegging points are great when fishing a shallow lake and staking out is required.

Available in three sizes – 2.50m, 3.00m and 3.50m.

 Jamie Burt

These are very well designed nets that are ideal for natural and commercial venues.

The dark mesh dries quickly, and keeps the fish in the shade.

The corners have been reinforced to stop wear caused by the net rubbing on the lake bed.

"A brilliant net for both commercial and natural venues."

The angle-adjuster is very strong and has a retaining cord that stops parts from being lost.

Rings enable the net to be pegged out in shallow water.

The dimensions of the net are perfect for both natural venues and commercials with net weight limits. Several nets can be positioned next to each other, giving you plenty of options.

Space Saver Carp Mesh Keepnets

I own quite a few keepnets, but the ones that I find I use more than any other are the Space Saver Carp Mesh models. These modern nets have proven to be really long-lasting and strong, making them ideal for the big carp found in many venues.

I tend to use the fish-friendly carp mesh version, which is available in 2.5m, 3m, and 4m versions. The mesh has a lovely soft feel which I especially like. The top and bottom rings are made of alloy for added strength and I can report that the mesh shows no signs of wear in the corners – a common area of failure on many nets.

The variable angle bankstick attachment has also been nicely reinforced and enables me to get the nets positioned perfectly on my footplate legs.

As the name suggests, these nets don’t take up a great deal of space, and are remarkably lightweight too. For anglers that need to carry several nets you can pack these into a double net bag with room to spare.

Often an unsung bit of gear that we all use, but one that has been thoroughly thought out to do its job with all of the common weak-points designed out to give a long useful life.

Jim Hall

Carp mesh is brilliant for keeping carp and other big fish quiet and in the shade.

Nets have a tough life and these ones have past the test of time.
