The Best Landing Net Combo for Carp 1

The Best Landing Net Combo for Carp?

The Best Landing Net Combo for Carp?

Match fishing on commercials today, especially on carp oriented venues, is all about speed, and every few seconds that can be saved during its duration simply means more fish in the net and the difference between winning and coming absolutely nowhere.

One area of concern has to be landing fish as when you finally get a carp under control and it surfaces you need to get that net under it ultra quick. If the handle is too short or heavy this can be a serious problem. Once in the net comes another time consuming problem as if the mesh is too big then often is the case of your banded pellet getting caught within the mesh or worse still breaking.

Finding not just a landing net handle that is light and strong enough to solve this problem but also a net that’s big enough for sizable carp but also light as well as having a fine mesh can be difficult, or so you thought!

Take a look at the Hyper Carp XTR landing net handle and Black Magic Compact Pan net as if, what’s been mentioned before, is an irritating situation that you find yourself in then your problems have just been solved!

The XTR handle itself is long, 4m in fact and comes in three sections. It weighs an incredible 370g and isn’t just at home on carp commercials but also on running water, especially those with steep high banks, and as for its strength, rigidity and robustness, well its simply mind blowing. Moving this through the water is effortless, doesn’t bend even under the strain of a very big carp and when most handles would just break under the strain this handle simply makes light work of everything thrown at it which is all down to its reinforced spiral winding construction.

As for the Black Magic Compact Pan net, well it teams up with the XTR handle perfectly, not too big (L 44cm x W 38cm) but big enough to drop an oversized bonus carp in if needed. Another point I love is it’s not too deep, just 24cm, which means I can unhook each carp easily before lowering and releasing into the keepnet. As previously mentioned the mesh is soft, strong and fine, just 2mm, which eliminates those teething problems of caught up/broken hairs!

Having had this net for years I’ve certainly used and abused it and being robust, light and strong it’s withstood everything I’ve thrown at it as has the Hyper Carp XTR landing net handle.

If you want the best handle/net combination then you’ve just found it!

hybrid elastic group

Hybrid & Microbore Elastics for Carp

Hybrid & Microbore Elastics for Carp

Although I have been using Browning’s Microbore elastic for most of my commercial carp fishing over the last few years I have to admit that after experimenting with the new Hybrid elastic I can honestly say that I’m now torn between the two, especially for certain methods such as mugging.

When mugging I have two basic setups, a light rig and a heavier rig. I always start of on the heavier rig, basically because if the carp are feeding aggressively then this rig will allow me to get them under control and in the net quicker, however if they are a big spooky and I need to fine things down to keep the bites coming then the lighter rig comes into play.

Let’s first talk about the elastic used for the heavier rig.  The elastic used here is the Microbore 2.3mm blue/pearl elastic that has a rating of 9-13. It’s used in conjunction with a pulla kit and has a 7x stretch factor. I like this elastic as it has a very thin bore, feels really light through the top kit, is far stronger than most other elastics for its diameter, is long lasting and as it doesn’t flatten under pressure against the bush it runs so much smoother under load. If you haven’t tried Browning’s Microbore elastic yet then you need to as the difference in feel when playing a fish is unbelievable!

For the lighter rig I use the Hybrid 2.0mm which is a brilliant all purpose carp elastic with a rating of 14-16. It’s really good for bagging medium sized carp as; once again in conjunction with a pulla kit, gets those carp under control quickly. Coming in 6m lengths there’s enough for three short or two long top kits and it powers up nicely and is very smooth, certainly one that you need to take a look at if you prefer solid elastic!

Sphere Feeder Ultra Lite Hooks 1

Sphere Feeder Ultra Lite Hooks

Sphere Feeder Ultra Lite Hooks

A lot of my feeder fishing on natural venues revolves around catching numbers of silverfish averaging a few ounces each, but of course the chance of a rogue lump or two as well. This is where I choose the Sphere Feeder Ultra lite Hooks. Hooks and hooklengths need to be relatively refined for this style of fishing, but not so light that the ever-present chance of hooking a decent bream, eel or tench is ignored or worse still wasted when light gear loses the battle. Whilst they cannot be relied upon, those bonus fish can mean the difference between winning and losing, so I need to capitalise on every opportunity.

Light hooks are great for presentation, and ensure my hookbait looks as natural as the particles it’s surrounded by, but of course everything on a feeder tends to require stepping up a bit.  My hook of choice for this style of fishing is the Sphere Feeder Ultra Lite, which despite being exceedingly light weight, packs an amazing amount of strength – don’t be fooled by the larger sizes, these area great for bit baits and aggressive retrieves when you need to ensure fish stay on all the way back. This must be down to the Japanese wire and tempering process used, but also the shape too. Whatever the ‘secret alchemy’ used, they have proven to be extremely reliable for this style of fishing.

Another point (sic) worth mentioning are the points! These really are razor sharp, but last really well too, meaning I bump less fish and need to change my hooklength less often.

Hook shapes are a very personal thing, but I do like the slightly ‘wedge-shaped’ bend on these hooks that see the point facing very slightly towards the shank. This shape, combined with the straight point, goes in and stays in, meaning less lost fish when I am fishing at range.

Bait wise, this is an allrounder, but really is a great maggot hook, especially when fishing with two or three grubs. It also lends itself really well to fishing worm heads and bunches of caster too. A great feeder hook that I use a lot.

Available in sizes 8 to 18

Summer Clothing

Summer Clothing

If there is one thing you need to be when fishing a match or simply pleasure fishing is comfortable, and I don’t mean how your tackle station is set up, but just as important is what you are wearing.

A great combination is the Dry Fit Polo Shirt, Sweatpants and if it’s bright and sunny then the Clubber Cap completes the outfit.

The Dry Fit Polo Shirt comes in five sizes, as do the Sweatpants, M, L, XL, XXL and XXL and has been designed to give plenty of movement in the arm fit making casting and landing fish all day effortless. Made from a quick drying100% Polyester material it’s really comfortable, light, highly breathable making it ideal for those hot summer days as well as classy looking coming in the standard Browning burgundy and black colours.

The Sweatpants, or joggers as I refer to them, are made from a really soft comfortable to the skin material and come with an elastic waistband and cord to tighten accordingly plus wide ankle bands and three pockets, two zipped side pockets and a rear pocket.

If you want to look the part but more importantly be comfortable before, during and after each session then this is the perfect clothing combo!

hybrid power mono 1

Cenex Hybrid Power Mono

Cenex Hybrid Power Mono

Cenex Hybrid Power Mono has become a firm favourite for pole anglers for their pole rigs and hook lengths.

I’ve been using it for many years and it really is a reliable, abrasion resistant, ultra strong line that just won’t let you down. Although is strength in relation to its diameter is amazing there are a few other qualities that I love, the first being just how supple it is which creates perfect hook bait presentation. This suppleness also allows knots to be bedded down resulting in unbelievable knot strength and being transparent it just adds to the list of benefits and reasons why when it’s used more fish end up in the net!

Coming on 100m spools it really is value for money and a line that all anglers need to check out.

Available in seven popular diameters –

0.10mm 3lb/1.37kg

0.12mm 3.7lb/1.7kg

0.18mm 8.5lb/3.9kg

duo bush 1

Duo Bush System

Duo Bush System

When buying a Browning pole you will find that they all come with a Duo Bush as standard. This simple but innovative bush allows you to switch between using two diameter elastics using the same top kit, which means the need for less top kits and no cutting back.

If you don’t have a Browning pole don’t worry as these are supplied in packs of two, in three different size options meaning that you can still benefit from this simple solution. Once fitted (the packaging comes with a measuring guide) the Duo bush allows for a fine diameter elastic to be used, yet simply by removing this and leaving the white bush mean that a heavier, larger diameter elastic can be used.

Made from aero quality black PTFE these bushes are purposely short and have a very thin walled to give the largest possible hole size and to reduce friction, they also make top kits look very smart.

Available in three sizes –

Standard 4.5/3.9mm

Large 5.5/4.5mm

Extra Large 6.5/5.5mm

skyline kit 1

Skyline One-Piece Top Kits

Skyline One-Piece Top Kits

There has been a definite shift amongst Commercial Anglers towards using one-piece top kits for some styles of fishing over recent years. Let’s take a look at some of the reasons for this, and the benefits these kits have.

One-piece kits replace the standard top two supplied with a pole, reducing the length by roughly a metre in most cases. The steeper taper of a one-piece kits obviously stiffens up the pole, and gives extra strength – ideal when big weights are expected.

Browning kits come fitted with the brilliant Duo Bush as standard, so there is no need to cut back the pole to fit even large diameter elastics. As you wold expect, they are also fitted with side puller bushes, making elastication very easy.

Browning’s one-piece kits come in either a standard carbon finish, or with a Skyline grey finish that blends in well with the colour of the sky, making them ideal when shallow fishing. The Skyline kits also feature coloured depth bands at 10cm intervals, making it easy to set the depth perfectly on multiple kits.

Talking of multiple kits, another benefit of one-piece kits is that make it easy to store rigs ready-rigged on the kit. This makes getting organised on the bank so much easier,, and although you can do this with two-piece kits, nothing is simpler than a one-piece configuration.

Finally, there is the price. One-piece kits are obviously great value and a lot cheaper than two-piece kits. Any time when maximum length isn’t required, especially when you are using heavier elastics for big weight fishing, the one-piece kits make a great solution.

CK Carp Waggler 1

CK Carp Waggler

CK Carp Waggler

I can’t quite believe that it’s over ten years since I first started using the Commercial King range of shorter rods. Back then they revolutionised my approach when targeting carp on commercial fisheries and have now become standard equipment for anglers on these high stocked venues.

I was wrong in thinking that these brilliant rods couldn’t get any better, but advances in carbon and fittings have allowed Browning to take these mid range rods to a new level. Let’s first look at the two big upgrades that I’m really impressed with. The first is in the Carp King, as its been renamed, rods handle as all the range now come with the shortened ergonomic handle, similar to those fitted on the high end Sphere range. The reason for shortening the handle on the CK Carp Waggler is simply to allow anglers to cast quicker and the flattened handle makes it so much more comfortable, you can really ‘feel the difference’ when casting and playing fish as so much more is transmitted back to the angler. The second upgrade might seem very small but Browning have listened to their anglers and have straightened the end eye of the rod, something I have been doing for years, so that those annoying moments when the line catches around are eliminated.

The CK Carp Waggler is 11ft/3.30m and is a two piece rod, like the rest of the CK range, and allows the match angler to arrive with multiple set up rods all rigged and ready to go. Weighing in at just 170g and with a casting weight of 20g it really is a dream to use, ultra slim with a lovely parabolic ‘non-lock’ action, a real all-round carp float rod.

Other features are high quality smooth guides, toned down graphics, keeper ring, plus a cork screw down reel fitting.

If you are looking for a versatile, mid priced, two piece carp float rod then you need to check this, and the rest of the CK range out.

The best has just got better!
